Engineers Australia offers assessment services for membership, skilled migration and engineering specialisations.
If you’re unhappy with the outcome of your assessment, we have a two-tier appeal process you can follow. You may request a review, and if needed, you can then lodge an appeal.
Eligible assessment types for review and appeal:
- Competency assessment
- Chartered assessment
- Registration assessment
- Engineering Executive assessment
- Migration skills assessment
- Specialisation assessment.
A review offers recourse for an individual who is dissatisfied with the outcome of their assessment. An individual may request Engineers Australia to reconsider the decision. The review is handled internally by an assessor who had no prior involvement in the original application.
An appeal is the final step for challenging both the original assessment and the review outcome. It's conducted by an independent panel of experienced experts either from industry or Engineers Australia, who will thoroughly evaluate both decisions and make an independent, fair and transparent final decision.
When you can request a review
You can request a review of your original outcome if you believe:
- the assessment did not consider all relevant submitted materials
- irrelevant information was considered
- due process was not followed
- the assessment demonstrated bias that disadvantaged you.
Requirements
To submit a review application, you must:
- lodge the request within three months from the date of your assessment outcome letter
- clearly state the grounds for the review and provide a letter outlining your reasons for requesting the review
- complete and submit your review application via the online form.
Review process
Once we’ve received your request, an internal review assessor – independent from the original application – will review all relevant information used in the initial assessment decision.
New evidence can only be submitted if specifically requested by the assessor or allowed under exceptional circumstances as determined by Engineers Australia. The process may take up to seven weeks to complete.
Review outcome
You’ll receive an email with the outcome of your review.
If your review is successful and the original assessment decision is overturned, your review fee will be refunded and a revised outcome letter issued.
If the original decision is upheld, we’ll provide a detailed explanation of the reasons for our decision. If you’re not satisfied with the review outcome, you have the option to lodge an appeal.
Requirements
You can only request an appeal if you have received a review outcome.
To submit an appeal, you must:
- lodge within six months from the date of the original assessment outcome letter
- clearly state the grounds for the appeal and provide a letter outlining your reasons for requesting the appeal
- complete and submit your appeal application via the online form.
Appeal process
Once we receive your request, an independent appeal manager – who was not involved in processing your review or original assessment – will process it and form an appeal panel of subject matter experts from industry or Engineers Australia. The panel will review all relevant information from both the original and review assessors to reach its decision.
New evidence is only considered during the appeal process if specifically requested by the panel or allowed under exceptional circumstances as determined by Engineers Australia. The process may take up to 12 weeks to complete.
Appeal outcome
You’ll receive an email with the outcome of your appeal.
If your appeal is successful and the review outcome decision is overturned, your review and appeal fees will both be refunded, and a revised outcome letter issued.
If the original decision is upheld, we’ll provide a detailed explanation. The appeal outcome is final and cannot be challenged further.
The Review and Appeal process must not to be used for making a complaint against a member of Engineers Australia, or about a product/service we provide.
