Beam engines were used in ships prior to the invention of the screw propellor.  John Ericsson invented the screw propellor, and he was told by the great navy men of the time that it was a bad idea that would never work in a real application.

The first powered ships were an adaptation of sailing ships, and they were propelled either by sidewheels or a rear mounted paddlewheel, but generally still had sails.
The steam engine was not considered as reliable as wind power, and so the sails were retained.  The first northern ironclad "Monitor" build by John Ericsson had written into its contract that in addition to its steam engine, it must also be fitted with sails.  John Ericsson wisely ignored that part of the contract and used his low-profile twin-piston, single-cylinder trunk engine with a screw propellor.  Once the first battle of the ironclads was over, there was no longer a concern for sails.

Steam ship engines went though a long period of evolution, beginning with the beam-type ship engines, the oscillators, the single expansion, and then the compound units.

I have created a few animations for a paddlewheel oscillator, and an articulated paddlewheel which I have posted in other places on this forum, but I will repeat here.  You can click on the animation to run it, or download it and run it with a web browers.  There is a delay until all 16 frames are loaded before the aninmations begin to run.
The idea behind the articulated paddlewheel was to exhert force on the water in the line of travel of the boat.  A non-articulated paddlewheel tends to exert forces which first raise the boat an then lower the boat, and these motions waste energy.

Also I will include some engravings of steam ships from public domain books.

Pat J

Edit:  Clicking on the two pictures below will start their animation.

My dad (Bob J.) had a commercial river pilot's license, and if I remember correctly, he traveled on the Mary Woods No.2 on its last journey up the Arkansas river, and was allowed to pilot it for a portion of this trip.
