Stumpf Uniflow Steam Engines
« on: April 06, 2011, 03:31:30 PM »

Here is a book that I ran across about uniflow steam engines that were designed by Prof. J. Stumpf, apparently out of Germany.  Stumpf came up with some quite a sophisticated design for single cylinder steam engine that was reported to be as efficient as a compound engine.

Stumpf went on to actually have a number of these engines constructed, and apparently they did perform as he predicted.  Unfortunately, his designs arrived at the end of the steam engine era, but it would appear that the influence of the uniflow engine lasted far beyond this period.

Nordberg also had a Uniflow design (engraving included below).

The last engraving in this series mentions a cutoff value of 8% of the stroke.  Since the engine bearings and other parts are designed for initial pressure, these engines can work for extended periods of time under overload conditions, with double the normal horsepower output.

Detroit Diesel built a series of 2-stroke diesel engines in the 1940's that use the uniflow design, and they are considered some of the most reliable and maintainable diesel engines ever built.  We have operated a Detroit Diesel in the family for 39 years (671 inline model), and this engine continues to run flawlessly, although it does require an occasional rebuild.  The Detroit Diesel was designed to be easily rebuilt, and included replaceable cylinder liners, etc.
The 671 uses individual injectors, so failure of one or more of the injectors will not prevent the engine from starting and running.
