Thermal Expansion of Metals in Steam Engines
« on: May 29, 2012, 01:08:12 AM »

Here is a page from one of the old steam engine design books that addresses thermal expansion in various metals.

Aluminum is not listed, but its thermal expansion is greater than steel or cast iron.

The shrinkage factor for patterns (for casting metals) is 1.02 (2%) for aluminum, and closer to 1.01 (1%) for cast iron.
