To find and celebrate top engineering projects from across Australia, we have different award divisions based on location. We’ll choose a finalist from each division, and these projects will go on to compete for Project of the Year – our national award.

We’ll celebrate the winning project at a special awards event, and they’ll receive:

  • A trophy and certificate.
  • Digital badges for their email signatures and social media posts.
  • Project coverage in create magazine and across Engineers Australia’s digital channels.

In addition, outstanding projects are recognised at the local level, helping us shine a light on more projects and perspectives from across the profession.

Partnering with Engineers Australia Excellence Awards provides a unique opportunity for your organisation to position itself as a market leader and a driver of engineering excellence. You will be recognised across a multi-channel marketing campaign, connecting you to not only our 130,000-plus members but also the wider engineering community.

Renewable Hydrogen Fuel Cell Generator Pilot at Telecommunication Sites – Energys Australia

This innovative project focused on the engineering of Australia’s first commercial deployment of 10 kW PEM hydrogen fuel cell generators (FCG10) across five remote telecommunication sites in regional Victoria.

The project tackled the critical challenge of providing reliable emergency backup power to off-grid infrastructure while eliminating diesel dependency. The engineering solution integrated fuel cell stacks with bespoke battery systems, DCDC converters, DCAC inverters and specialised cooling and ventilation systems. Each installation features type IV hydrogen manifold storage packs engineered for remote operation and safety compliance.

The project overcame significant technical challenges including system integration in harsh environments, hydrogen storage optimisation and ensuring seamless transition during power outages. The project demonstrates the commercial viability of hydrogen technology for critical telecommunications infrastructure, establishing a new benchmark for sustainable off-grid power solutions in Australia.
